Habitually Grateful

This weeks blog comes to us from guest contributor, Jan Leasure.  Currently Jan is a Senior Loan Officer in Libertyville, but previously was a teacher and nationally syndicated columnist for over 20 years.

Why was November chosen as “National Gratitude Month”? The obvious reason is because Thanksgiving happens in November and that gives everyone a reason to stop for a moment and visualize the things for which they are grateful.

When I was an English teacher, one of the things that I had my students do was keep a Gratitude Journal. Many students had a lot of ups and downs in their lives so sometimes writing down one thing was a struggle.  What we all learned from this exercise is that there were a lot of intangible things to be grateful for; love, friendship, a sunny day, trading lunches with your bestie, or the fact that Mrs. Leasure did not read your love note over the intercom!  What was the purpose of this exercise? We learned that although there was a lot to complain about in EVERYONE’S life, if we started off our day or class with just one thing for which we were grateful our entire day was more positive and it put things in perspective.

Now as I look back over my life with more perspective, I find that it is more important than ever to find gratitude in my life every day and in every way.

Ways that Gratitude can Help Us

  • Gratitude makes us healthier by making us feel more positive and fighting depression.
  • Gratitude can help your career. A positive employee makes for a more friendly workplace.
  • Gratitude helps us bounce back from stress and can physically lower blood pressure.
  • Gratitude leads to optimism which believe it or not can increase your life span.
  • Gratitude increases your energy levels. (Negativity sucks your energy).
  • Gratitude can help you look better (How many products are sold by crabby models?) If gratitude would make you look ten years younger, that’s like a free mental facelift! I’m in!
  • Gratitude can make you a better friend. I am deeply grateful for my friends and love them even more when they are grateful for me.
  • Gratitude can make you a better parent. Think about the difference between gratitude and criticism. Showering a child with gratitude has deep long lasting effects.
  • Gratitude has been proven to help the quality of your sleep. Count your blessings to stop counting sheep!
  • Gratitude increases your productivity – both in your personal life and in your work. Does that mean that gratitude is a money maker? Well maybe.

We all have a lot to be grateful for, not just at Thanksgiving, but every day that we open our eyes. I am taking this opportunity to write down one thing that I am grateful for every day on my calendar. My goal is to pay that gratitude forward. Try it, you’ll like it!

5 Ways to Boost Your Energy at Work

I’m not sure about you, but about 3:30 pm every single day my brain decides to turn off and stop working. I tend to get tired and antsy at the same time, which leads to some seriously shameful unproductiveness. Seeing as the boss (as most bosses do), frowns upon dilly dallying till 5 pm, I decided that I needed to find some ways to boost my energy levels. Here’s a few simple ideas that I’ve found help keep you going till the very last second.

1.Get Moving!

Yes, I know it sounds cliche, but seriously. Get up and go to the bathroom, empty your shred pile, or just take a lap around the office! Your body needs occasional movement to change channels and get oxygen flowing. You don’t need to be away from your desk for an hour but little breaks to stretch your legs here or there won’t hurt.Keeping your body warmed up will prepare you for whatever tasks your boss might throw at you.

  1. Eat Well.

I’ll admit that snacking is my weakness. I’ve found that when I sit at my desk and snack all day, I can barely function in the afternoon. Couple that with a large lunch and I’m done for. If this is something you struggle with, try to start strategic eating. Plan a few healthy snacks to get you through the day, my favorite being apples and almonds. Prepare your lunch the night before so you can make sure you won’t end up ordering out for lunch or grabbing something frozen. Don’t let a food coma stop you from reaching your #goals.  There are many additives in food that may be making you drowsy.  Dairy is a big culprit, but to find out for sure it may be time for a food sensitivity test!

  1. Take Your Vitamins at Lunch

If you’re an awesome person then you’re taking your multivitamins. If this is the case, then try taking them with your lunch and see if that makes a difference. I currently take Salutogenic Life’s Life Pack for Women, which has a couple different vitamins including a B vitamin which really helps with energy. If you have  chronic issues with energy (even when you’re not at work), it might be a good idea to contact your practitioner to check your vitamin levels, you might find you have deficiencies such as iron or B12.

  1. Streeeetch!

If you’re a multitasker, this is a good one for you to do while you’re taking your walk! If you can’t get away from your desk and you’re stuck staring at your screen all day, try to slip in a few neck and shoulder stretches. This helps fatigued muscles that have been stuck in one position and may also increase energy by decreasing muscle discomfort. If you’re starting to feel stiff, stretch it out!

  1. Ditch the Coffee.

GASP! Yes, I did just say that. I know coffee is the go to drink when you start to feel the brain turning off, but just hear me out. Two words. Green. Tea. This is such a great source of caffeine without getting the jitters! This allows me to be more productive without bouncing off the walls. Green tea also contains an amino acid called L-theanine that helps the brain. The combination of caffeine and L-theanine leads to improved brain function and the ability to focus. BOOM. I don’t think I need to say more.

The Dangers of Energy Drinks

Did you know that there are 11 deaths reported with the use of 5-hour Energy and at least 5 deaths reported for the use of Monster Energy Drinks?  It is important to note that the details surrounding these deaths are not all cited, so there is great possibility of adverse reactions of energy drinks with medications and/or alcohol.  

Energy drinks do not provide energy, such as the type we get from carbohydrates for example.  They provide caffeine, a stimulant to your nervous system.  The goal of an energy drink is to boost your mental alertness, appearing as an energy boost.

Consumerlabs.com privately tested the caffeine levels in some popular energy drinks.  

  • 8-Ounce Cup Of Coffee: 95 milligrams
  • Monster Energy M-3 Super, 5-Ounces: 206 milligrams
  • 5-Hour Energy, 2-Ounces: 206 milligrams

One of the problems with energy drinks is the quick uptake of such high levels of caffeine.  Most people may have more than one cup of coffee a day, but they drink it gradually rather than doing a shot of 5-hour energy.  Your body can become addicted to caffeine if it is unable to regulate energy properly. Caffeine withdrawal symptoms can include headaches, mood disturbances, constipation, insomnia and even flu-like symptoms!  Caffeine withdrawal is now a documented disorder.

If you feel you need an energy boost, start with increasing your hydration.  Adequate sleep, hydration and vitamins will put you on a path to increased energy.  Be wary of energy drinks, and be extremely cautious of mixing these drinks with alcohol or any medication regardless if over the counter or prescription.  The regulations when it comes to energy drinks is extremely lax, so as a consumer you need to be informed and educate yourself prior to consumption of such beverages.
